Not only has General Motors finally fulfilled Zora Arkus Duntov’s dream of one day producing a mid-engine corvette, GM is also changing up its previous generation Corvette powerplant that usually had a traditional pushrod V-8 and taken the Zo6 to the next level. The 2022 Chevy Corvette Z06 will sound, unlike any Vette that’s come before. The Z06’s V-8 will exchange pushrod valves and a cross-plane crank for dual-overhead cams and a flat-plane crank. These changes will result in a first-ever rev-happy stingray that will be mechanically similar to the V-8 in the Corvette C8.R race car. Not only did General Motors change the motor characteristics the Z06 also will look meaner than the mainstream C8 thanks to GM including flared fenders, larger air inlets, larger rear spoiler, and aerodynamic’s that actively adjust to maximize downforce and traction.
Most people originally thought the new generation Z06 would come with forced induction, but General Motors has reserved the saucyness for the more powerful ZR-1 and the gas/ electric Hybrid Zora models. GM didn’t just increase the horsepower from the base model C8, they went with a completely new 5.5 liter Flat Plane Twin Cam motor which will allow the new Z06 to rev to the moon and back. The Zo6 will have the ability to rev to 9,000 RPMs. When compared, the C8 Zo6 will trump most modern supercars and rev higher than almost all. This engine is expected to make over 600 horsepower and easily top the 526 hp voodoo Shelby GT350 and GT350R and become the highest horsepower naturally aspirated engine. The Zo6 will be equipped with a Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This is the same transmission that is used in the base C8, but we’re expecting some tweaks to help with putting the power down to the ground. Not only will the transmission be tweaked, expect wider stickier tires as well as a more aggressive suspension set up.
The C8 Zo6 will have an exclusive motor and enhanced appearance, but the Zo6 will inherit most of its features and technology from the base C8. This includes a 12.0-inch fully digital gauge display, a heads-up display, heated and ventilated seats, and wireless charging. Expect some Z06 inspired seats, Carbon fiber, microsuede throughout the cabin, and a Performance Data Recorder which will keep tabs on how your Zo6 is performing on the track or when it may be in others hands. The base C8 comes equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display that runs Chevy’s Infotainment 3 Plus system and we don’t see why the Z06 will not share the same interface and features. This operating system seems to include everything needed when out and about. include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The C7 Zo6 started at about $25,000 more than the base model, so we think it’s safe to bet that the starting price of the 2022 Z06 should start around $85,000 when it eventually goes on sale.
